Borrowed my friends 70-200mm F/2.8 Canon Telephoto, and shot this on a Canon 40D.  Even at full telephoto (200mm) zoom with F/2.8 you get a very shallow depth of field as illustrated here.  The focus point was the left most statue thing, and I was at an angle to the vendor’s booth, so as you proceed right the distance increases by about a half a foot to a foot in this shot, and you can see the DOF effect increase from left to right.
